SANTA FE— Governor Bill Richardson today highlighted the news that health information
technology efforts in New Mexico have received a $13 million boost from the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Social Security Awards Nearly $20 Million in Recovery Act Contracts For Electronic Medical Records
Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, today announced that 15 healthcare providers and networks have received $17.4 million in contract awards to provide electronic medical records to the agency. These electronic medical records, which will be sent through the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN), will significantly shorten the time it takes to make a disability decision and will improve the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of the disability program.
LCF RESEARCH Receives Funding For

Albuquerque, N.M.- The Albuquerque Coalition for Healthcare Quality has announced that LCF Research (formerly Lovelace Clinic Foundation) has been awarded a three-year grant by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to evaluate the impact of the New Mexico Health Information Collaborative (NMHIC) Health Information Exchange (HIE).
During 2008, the New Mexico Health Information Collaborative (NMHIC), which is staffed and operated by Lovelace Clinic Foundation (LCF), had a series of significant accomplishments. LCF/NMHIC implemented a robust network infrastructure, established network interfaces with major health care provider organizations, and successfully demonstrated the exchange of test patient information over the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

On September 23, 2008, the New Mexico Health Information Collaborative (NMHIC) successfully demonstrated the exchange of patient information over the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).Dr. Robert White, Director of Medical Informatics at Lovelace Clinic Foundation (LCF) used the NMHIC health information exchange network to access a fictitious patient record from a healthcare provider in Albuquerque.

On October 5th, 2007, HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt announced the award of nine contracts to health information exchange networks (HIEs) to begin trial implementations of the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN). HIEs are networks with strong protection for patient privacy that connect patient health care information and electronic health records for use by providers and patients. The trial implementations will test the ability of HIE networks to interoperate with other HIE networks, thereby becoming a network of networks.
